==Background==
The expandable baton is a non-lethal melee weapon used by peace-keeping and riot-control forces all over the world in 2052. It's composed of a cylindrical outer shaft containing two telescoping inner shaft that lock into each other when expanded. The shafts are made of steel and a few whacks can knock a target unconscious.
By 2072 this expandable baton model has been widely replaced by a Baton (DX2)|side-handle baton made of heavyweight polyurethane.
==Tactics==
The weapon is the basic tool for anyone who is willing to proceed with stealth and/or not kill anyone. As long as you move as close to the target as possible undetected and then hit him in the back, it will take out all basic soldiers and civilians in the game with one swing. It can even be used against enemies that are aware of you if you stun them first (with Pepper gun, Fire extinguisher or the Riot prod). You don't even need to stand up to knock enemies out; just aim at their lower back.
One thing to remember about using stun weapons is to '''not''' hit the enemy's head. Because of the way Deus Ex calculates damage, it will actually be less effective than hitting the enemy in the torso.

==Shifter==
In Shifter, a unique Baton can be found. On the players final visits to Hell's Kitchen, A baton called Blackjack can be found on a desk in Gilbert Renton's office at the 'Ton Hotel. It is a regular baton filled with lead by Paul Denton, dealing more damage while still being nonlethal. The Blackjack can be found earlier (on first entering Paul's room in the 'Ton hotel) if the player has been largely non-lethal so far in the game: Paul leaves it with a note indicating his approval.
